Nevada - Las Vegas Area: Las Vegas, NV

Las Vegas NV: Casinos, Golf Resorts & Vacations

Las Vegas Nevada is perhaps the most popular entertainment capital in the world.

Las Vegas, NV History

In the early 1700’s, Spanish traders en route to Los Angeles passed through the unexplored Las Vegas Valley. Until then, the area was inhabited by Paiute Indians. The valley was later named Las Vegas, which is Spanish for "The Meadows."

In 1844, the explorer Captain John Fremont wrote about Las Vegas, which brought the valley to the attention of others. In 1855, Brigham Young had 30 Mormon missionaries build a fort in the Las Vegas valley. Raided periodically by Paiute Indians, the fort was abandoned in 1857. It was the first non-Indian settlement in the region.

In the late 1800’s, the discovery of minerals, including precious metals, lead to the beginning of the mining industry. With the completion of the main railway that linked Southern California with Salt Lake City, Las Vegas became a railroad town with the railroad its principal industry for the next 25 years.

Las Vegas was founded as a city on May 15, 1905. In March 1931, gambling was legalized in the State of Nevada. One month later, the city of Las Vegas issued six gambling licenses. When divorce laws were liberalized in the State of Nevada, it made it easier to obtain a "quickie" divorce after only six weeks of residency. Short-term residents stayed at "dude ranches", which were the forerunners of the sprawling Strip hotels.
