Winnsboro TX: Certified Retirement Community
Winnsboro, Texas is a popular vacation and retirement community located in the Piney Woods. Many seniors choose to relocate to Winnsboro after enjoying many relaxing vacations in the area.
Winnsboro TX History The Winnsboro area was first home to the Caddo Indians and later to French settlers. Gray B. King surveyed the area in 1835 when it was part of the Mexican State of Caohuila. The first European settlers were Englishmen John E. Wynn and W.R. McMillan who came through "Crossroads", as it was called, in the early 1850’s. They purchased 351 acres of the Gray B. King tract of rich land that was located on the edge of piney woods. They opened the first post office and a mercantile business in 1855. The settlement's name was originally spelled Wynnsborough, but it was changed to Winnsborough when the post office was established. In 1893, the town's name was shortened to Winnsboro at the request of town leaders.
During the oil boom in the early 1900’s, what is now Market Street was known as The Bowery. Saloons and brothels lined the street where there were several shootouts. Today, the Trails Country Centre For The Arts is housed in one of the old saloons. During the early 1930’s, the famous outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow often stopped to eat in Winnsboro while driving through the area.
